Chapter Eighteen

Another five hours of searching with Foxtrot’s custom facial recognition algorithm finally got us a hit in Las Vegas, Nevada. Of course. It was the jewel of the American gambling industry, the best place for making a big score, the most golden of all fleeces. It was also highly monitored, heavily secured, and a nightmare when it came to infiltration. Every casino had its own tricks, and none of them liked to share – not security information, not personnel, and definitely not the whereabouts of their potential clients. Tolentino would have a tough time pulling something big off here, but if he managed it, the rewards might be enormous.

We were at least able to figure out which hotel-casino he was staying in. The Diadem was an old casino that had just gotten a major facelift, and we were all going to be present for the grand re-opening of it, which was tomorrow. The tickets had cost a mint, but it promised a party for the ages: free drinks, fine cuisine, live shows, and huge giveaways, all things that drew people like honey drew flies.

We got a set of two suites, connected, and I pointedly gave Felicia and her guys one set of rooms for themselves while gathering my people in the other. We’d hardly been working with them for more than a day, and I was already exhausted by Black Cat and her crew. It was nice to settle in and take care of my own people, for now… and from the look of things, they needed taking care of.

Foxtrot was setting up our computer equipment, but he was moving slowly, blinking every couple of seconds like he could barely stay awake. Juliet was a little better, but she’d gotten to the point where she barely spoke to anyone, just huddled deeper into her hoodie and texted her girlfriend almost as often as she checked the cameras. Tango was unaccountably quiet, and apparently X-Ray’s melancholia was catching, because after she slumped down on the couch, Romeo settled in next to her, close enough that their shoulders were touching. He didn’t even say anything, just sat there leaning into her, like they needed each other’s support.

“Hey,” I said quietly to my team, who stopped what they were doing to listen in. “If you want to do some recon in the hotel, feel free.” It was as close as I could get to offering them a night off while we were working a job. “Check the exits, visit some of the stores and restaurants… Tolentino just got here, he’s going to be on high alert. We won’t grab him tonight. I’ll work with Felicia and her crew on getting surveillance set up, all right? And I’ll get some food brought up if you’d rather stay in,” I added.

There was a moment of silence, and then – “Sold,” Foxtrot said with a faint groan. “I’ve got a migraine the size of Manhattan right now. Too much screen time. I’m going to sleep.”

“Take the bedroom,” I told him.
